Parent groups, Mothers Rise Up and Parents For Future UK, are calling on Bruce Carnegie-Brown, Chair of Lloyd’s of London and a father of four, to stop insuring the world’s most damaging fossil fuel projects.
A group of UK mums will meet with Carnegie-Brown on May 17, ahead of Lloyd’s AGM and hold a Father’s Day protest outside Lloyd’s HQ.
Mother’s Rise Up and Parents For Future UK are the first environmental campaign groups to secure a meeting on the insurer’s climate policy with Lloyd’s Chair, Bruce Carnegie Brown. The meeting will take place ahead of Lloyd’s AGM on Thursday 19 May.
"I want to sit down - parent to parent - with Bruce Carnegie-Brown, look him in the eye, and find out why Lloyd’s is not using its huge power and influence to help secure a safe climate for all our children. I will be urging Lloyd’s to rule out insuring new fossil fuel extraction including the proposed East African Crude Oil Pipeline or new gas fields in the North Sea.”
"We will set out what we expect from Lloyd’s - to immediately stop insuring coal, tar sands, and arctic energy; a ban on new fossil fuel insurance, and a rapid phase down of support for existing oil and gas projects. We won’t be fobbed off, and we won’t be going away. This is about our children's future.”
Father’s Day action at Lloyd’s Headquarters
Mums, dads and children will make a Father’s Day appeal to Carnegie-Brown with a Mary Poppins themed musical and dance extravaganza outside Lloyd’s HQ.
The action will recreate the moment in the movie when George Banks, a career-focused dad, realises his children’s needs – rather than wealth – are what’s important in life. The parents hope the pressure will spark an epiphany for Bruce Carnegie-Brown which leads to climate action.
